Atlantic City Firefighter Awarded Certificate of Valor for Heroic Rescue

Posted April 20, 2026
Firefighter Joseph Reitzler of the Atlantic City Fire Department was awarded the prestigious Certificate of Valor by the Atlantic County Firefighters Association in recognition of his extraordinary bravery during a life-threatening incident on July 11, 2024.

On that day, ACFD’s Ladder 2 responded to a rapidly evolving fire at an aging four-story wooden structure in Atlantic City. Upon arrival, crews encountered a fully engulfed building, with multiple residents trapped inside. In desperation, several victims were forced to jump from windows to escape the advancing flames, resulting in both minor and serious injuries.

As conditions worsened, it was discovered that one individual remained trapped on the fourth floor, cut off by intense fire and heavy smoke. Without hesitation, Firefighter Reitzler sprang into action. Ascending Ladder 2’s 35-foot aerial ladder under extreme conditions, he reached the victim and successfully guided them down to safety, preventing what could have been a tragic loss of life.

In addition to the Certificate of Valor, Firefighter Reitzler received official commendations from the Atlantic County Board of County Commissioners, the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly, and Congressman Jeff Van Drew, all recognizing his heroic actions and unwavering commitment to public safety. The ceremony was held at the Anthony "Tony" Canale Fire Training Center in Egg Harbor Township.
