ACPD to Zero-in on Busy Atlantic City Intersections in the Name of Pedestrian Safety
Posted April 10, 2025The Atlantic City Police Department was recently awarded a grant from Highway Traffic Safety – Atlantic-Cape May Region for a comprehensive pedestrian safety project aimed at decreasing pedestrian crashes through education, enforcement, and public awareness. Beginning April 15, 2025 ACPD officers will begin conducting enforcement operations throughout high-volume pedestrian areas that will continue through the summer. Those who violate the existing traffic laws could be subject to citation and provided with an educational pamphlet explaining the importance of pedestrian safety.
Police are encouraging pedestrians to look both ways before crossing, utilize crosswalks and intersections, wait for the walk signal, and heads up, phones down. Similarly, the ACPD wants drivers to slow down, stop for people crossing, eliminate distractions, and adhere to “heads up, phones down.”
Pedestrian safety messaging will be displayed on the digital screens along the Atlantic City Boardwalk to make our visitors aware of this initiative. Also, a public service announcement will be run on television throughout the summer highlighting the importance of pedestrian safety. Sergeant Ivan Lopez, who supervises the Traffic Unit and its initiatives, recently attended several Atlantic City civic association meetings educating community members and distributing safety brochures and warning cards.
