Atlantic City Unveils Mississippi Freedom Trail Marker at Kennedy Plaza

The City of Atlantic City proudly hosted representatives from the State of New Jersey and State of Mississippi for an unveiling ceremony at Kennedy Plaza on August 20, 2024 for a Mississippi Freedom Trail Marker commemorating the efforts of the Mississippi Democratic Party, led by Fannie Lou Hamer, during the 1964 Democratic National Convention at Boardwalk Hall. This is the first Mississippi Freedom Trail marker outside of Mississippi.
 
Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, Sr., City Council Vice President Kaleem Shabazz, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves and New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way were among the speakers at the event, along with members of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Organizers of the event include Visit Atlantic City, Visit Mississippi, Visit New Jersey, the City of Atlantic City, the Mississippi Humanities Council, the State of New Jersey and the State of Mississippi.
 
Last year, a statue of Fannie Lou Hamer was unveiled inside Boardwalk Hall.
