Atlantic City Department of Public Works Installs Storm Drain Grates in Areas Prone to Flooding

Posted May 16, 2024

The City of Atlantic City Department of Public Works has completed Phase 1 of a project to install storm drain grates throughout the City as a preventative measure to avoid drainage clogs as a result of trash and debris buildup, ultimately lessening street flooding.

To date, more than 50 grates have been installed along Fairmount Avenue from Arizona to Hartford Avenues, and in the area of Arctic and Texas Avenues. The purpose of these grates is to prevent debris from entering the drains during flooding situations. With these new grates in place, the debris will instead pile up outside the storm drains, where it can easily be gathered by street sweepers. Prior to the Phase 1 installation process, Public Works crews also flushed out and vacuumed underground, cleaned out catch basins and unclogged the main lines in these areas.
